I have had this idea swimming around in my head for a while and there are a couple of people that seem interested. The idea is to have an RPG similar to my Dog Mountain RPG, but where the animals are rodents. Chinchillas, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Mice, Rats, and other rodents. Maybe they are all from a lab and had been tested on or were descendents of lab rodents. This idea would make it possible for some of the rodents to have special abilities. Or maybe they are rescued animals that live together at a loving human’s home, even though that wouldn’t give much room for special abilities. My biggest inspiration for a rodent based RPG comes from the Mouse Knight Tales by Cutter Hays. You can find his stories at: mouseknight.rmca.org/I would love to start a rodent based RPG soon, if there’s enough interest. My biggest obstacle at the moment is coming up with a good name. Is anyone here interested in a rodent based RPG? It will be at Yahoo Groups. Anyway… Take Care! ~Christine

Christine,
I'm still interested in this one. It seems like a good idea that I would love to see and be a part of.

I am still thinking about it. I think the lab escapees would do better of the two ideas. Just need a good name to start with. And to flesh out the idea more.
I still plan to do this, but I think I'll need help.

The rodent based RPG is still a possibility. It will most likely be on Yahoo Groups, since that is where most of my online groups are.
I still have a few ideas that I’ve delved deeper into…
1. A small rural town somewhere in North America. There’s a questionable lab there that tests on mainly rodents. The lab is eventually shut down and abandoned, and the lab rodents and descendents mostly live under the lab in colonies and have a relatively cooperative nature with other rodents. Outside the lab may be other rodents, wild or domesticated that may interact with the lab rodents.
2. A large city somewhere in North America. It’s very similar to idea # 1, but without the rural setting and most “outside” rodents are within city limits. This idea may limit the type of rodents a member can play.
3. A rodent rescue where humans rescue pet rodents and give them a home. Something about this rescue is magical, as most of the rodents seem to live together in peace. The rescue tends to have open cages, allowing the various rodent species to interact. Some rescued pet rodents may come from labs. This idea is mainly limited to pet rodents.
All ideas… The rodents are intelligent and in this RPG, are able to speak and can easily show emotions and thoughts. Very much like the wolf and dog based RPGs. Also may include other animals and even humans, though mainly as a minor NPC and may vary based on the idea.
Ideas 1 and 2… The lab rodents may have unique abilities or features, but nothing too extreme. Ask if you’re not sure. Other animals such as predators (stray cats, dogs, owls, hawks, etc) can be played. Humans involved could be scientists that worked in the lab, animal control officer, or the odd human that sees a rodent.
Idea 1 is also open to various wild rodents, since the area is mainly rural and undeveloped. And maybe pet rodents that live in the apartments and homes of the small rural town.
Idea 2 may also be open to wild rodents, but only the type of wild rodent you find in a big city. It’s also open to pet rodents that live in the apartments and homes in the city.
Idea 3 is mostly limited to pet rodents. There may be a human or two that takes care of the rescue home. Even though a rodent or two may come from a lab, the majority don’t.
I would include info and pictures for the main rodents expected in the RPG. Though special rodents from a lab may need their own info and pictures (if they differ from the basic info/pic of that rodent).
Is there an idea you like the best? The lab idea (rural or urban) or the rodent rescue idea?
As for the name of the RPG….how about Rodentia RPG? Or…for Idea 1…Anytown Rodents RPG. Idea 2…Metrocity Rodents RPG. Idea 3…Rodent Rescue RPG. Or what?
Anyway, if anyone is still interested in this idea, let me know. Also if you have any questions or suggestions, let me know. I think I’m ready to put this idea into action. I could have this RPG up and running as early as a couple of days or even the beginning of July.
Take Care!

I like Idea 1, with the rural setting. I'm all for it, as soon as you are ready.

The rural idea…
A small, rural town of less than 10,000 people…surrounded by forests and farmland…two rivers snake their way through the area. The town is not known for tourism and is rarely in the news, if ever.
On the outskirts of this town, along a river, lies a large abandoned building that was once a laboratory. A few years ago, pet rodents were secretly tested on by scientists that were looking for genetic diversity and possibilities of creating new and unique pets. Then suddenly, the experiments ended and the lab was abandoned; the rodents left behind by the scientists. Luckily for the rodents, their cages were left open and food was plentiful. Over the past few years, these rodents and their descendents have lived peacefully with each other in and under the abandoned lab.
Over the past few years, some of these lab rodents have explored beyond the abandoned property and have met wild rodents in the fields and forests, as well as pet rodents that mostly have loving homes in this small town. Surprisingly, most of these rodents have had peaceful or tolerable interactions with each other. But their lives are not always peaceful. They have to be wary of predators and uncaring humans that sometimes make it difficult for these rodents to live. And sometimes they will fight amongst themselves, but those fights are usually short lived.
A rodent based RPG where rodents can talk, think, and show emotions. Special abilities are limited to lab rodents and their descendents and cannot be extreme. Main characters are rodents (lab, pet and wild), but other animals and even humans are allowed as NPCs.
Rules are: -Make sure you have a profile approved by the owner, especially if your character is a genetically modified rodent. -Try to keep up with the threads you are in…try to post once a week if you can’t post once a day. -Do not control, seriously injure, or kill another player’s character without permission. But anything can happen to NPCs. -Notify group if you know you’re going to be gone for more than a week. -Have fun!
The only name I could come up with for this is “Anytown Rodents RPG”. If you have a better name, let me know. I am not good with names when it comes to RPGs.
Anyway,
Take Care!

Wow! I like that. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun. As for a name, what you came up with is good, and I can't think of anything else.

Anyone still interested in a rodent based RPG? About pet rodents that were tested/experimented on and then abandoned by the scientists? About it being in a rural setting? Where other rodents, other animals, and even the odd human can be played?
I have created the group, but am still in the process of posting info and all that. It's a Yahoo Group.
If anyone is interested, I'll give you the link. When everything is ready, I will post an ad.

Yes furryfan, this RPG was inspired by the Secret of NIMH (Rats of NIMH). It was also inspired by The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett and The Mouse Knight series by Cutter Hays. I'm sure there are other inspirations, but these are the only ones that come to mind at the moment.
I finally posted an ad for my Anytown Rodents RPG in the Small Mammals forum.
Hope to see you there.
